MAHABODHI BRANCHES      VENERABLE BHIKKHU PANYARAKKHITA

He was born on 9-9-1984 in a village called Khet in Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh which is in the northeast of the India. In 1995. At very early age of ten he got the opportunity to join Maha Bodhi Society in Bangalore. When he reached Mahabodhi centre in Bangalore his teacher Venerable Acharya Buddharakkhita gave him options - to remain as layman and do his studies or become a monk and work for welfare of others. Inspired by the Bada Bhanteji and his dedication for the service of mankind he was quick to say "I want to become a monk and follow your foot steps." Then at the age of 12 he was ordained as a novice on Buddha Pornima in May 1997.

He learnt Vinaya -Monastic code of discipline from Bhante Kassapa, Sutta-discourses and Pali from Bhante Ananda and Abhidhamma-higher teachings of the Buddha from Bada bhanteji. After more than 10 years of vigorous monastic training in 2006 he was given higher ordination as a bhikkhu at Buddhagaya with Bhante Sanghasena as his Upajjhaya. He realized that getting higher ordination as a bhikkhu isn't the end of monastic life but it is just the beginning of spiritual jorney. It equals to a new birth for a monk as it demands a new life of commitment, sincerity and responsibility towards oneself and others.

Then again in 2007 he was made to make another important choice in his life according the tradition of monastic Institute- to take the path of strict Meditation or take the path of Seva, helping people with humanitarian and spiritual services. It wasn't a difficult decision for him as he wanted to help others. In that same year Bada Bhanteji sent him back to Tawang to realize his dream.

Back in Tawang things were different. Helping wasn't as easy as making the decision. He was thinking what to do. But when he reached Tawang he had no place to stay. So the question was "where," not what project! He needed a place for the project first. Fortunately, as if planned some villagers came forward to give a beautiful site enough for a nice project. Then immediately a small temporary room was built where he stays at the moment.

He observed that home for orphaned and poor elders and hostel for children in the area is the need of the hour. Now it was the question of budget. During his visit to Europe with Bhante Ananda he was fortunate enough to get some donations for the construction of Home for Elders which is under construction and will be ready by end of February 2010.

His wish is that this centre will bloom into beautiful flower with its fragrance of love and compassion spread in all directions touching the lives of many people.
