DHAMMAPADA FESTIVAL

12-20 March 2011

90th Birthday of Venerable Acharya Buddharakkhita

 ALL ARE WELCOME

Ven.Acharya Buddharakkhita established the Maha Bodhi Society, Bangalore, in 1956 with the sole aim of carrying Dhamma to as many people as possible. Since then his tireless work continued till date offering the original teachings of the Buddha through spiritual, educational and humanitarian services. We are celebrating his 90th birthday as Dhammapada Festival from 12 to 20th March 2011.

We, the monks and devotees of Maha Bodhi Society cordially welcome  you to participate in all the programs.

THE HOLY DHAMMAPADA

The Dhammapada is a holy book of Buddhists which consists of 423 verses divided into 26 chapters. For the simple and unsophisticated, it is a sympathetic counselor; for the intellectually overburdened its clear and direct teachings inspire humility and reflection; for the earnest seeker, it is a perennial source of inspiration. Insights that flashed into the heart of the Buddha have crystallized into these luminous verses of pure wisdom. As profound expressions of practical spirituality, each verse is a guideline to right living. The Buddha unambiguously pointed out that whoever earnestly practices the verses of the Dhammapada would taste the bliss of emancipation.

DHAMMAPADA FESTIVAL

It is the Holy Dhammapada which led Bada Bhante Ven.Acharya Buddharakkhita to Buddhism and made him to become a Buddhist monk. Therefore it was his wish to make it popular so that it reaches to many people and they will equally benefit from golden words of the Buddha. Therefore we have been celebrating his birthday as Dhammapada Festival on every March purnima (Holi Purnima) day since he was born on this full moon day.

His 90th birthday will be celebrated from 12 to 20 March 2011 for 9 days. Various programs are organized to commemorate this event and we welcome you to participate wholeheartedly.

Inauguration of Bhagavan Buddha University of Pali and Theravada Buddhism

It was a long wish of Bada Bhante to establish an organisation which offered pure teachings of the Buddha in a systematic manner. It is now taking shape.  In the history of Maha Bodhi Society it will be another milestone when the new building for the Bhagavan Buddha University will be inaugurated on 19th March. This building is funded by the Government of India and constructed by the PWD. We are grateful to the Prime Minister for this special grant (1.72 crore) for developing the Buddhist center of higher learning.

The Mahabodhi Academy for Pali and Buddhist Studies is already running correspondence diploma courses in Buddhist studies. It will be further extended to the undergraduate and post graduate courses, both on distant and regular modes. Discussions for collaboration are being held with Buddhist universities in Burma and Thailand. This university will offer authentic Pali and Theravada Buddhist studies as found in the sacred Pali Tipitaka.

Paritta Chanting (Protective Chanting for Blessings and Happiness)

Twenty two monks from Sri Lanka will be coming especially for this occasion to conduct Paritta Chanting for protection, blessings and to ward off evil influences. There will be two night-long chantings, one starting 12th evening and concluding on 13th morning and the second one will be starting on 19th evening and concluding on 20th morning of March.

In Buddhist lands it is prevalent to listen to the recital of the Dhamma for protection and deliverance from evil as well as promoting welfare and well-being. The selected discourses for recital are known as Paritta Suttas. Paritta means protection. Paritta Sutt recital is a form of Sacca Kiriya, of depending on the truth for protection, justification or attainment. The saying ‘The power of truth protects the follower of the truth’ (Dhammo have rakkhati Dhammacarim) is the principle behind these sutta recitals. If it is true that virtue protects the virtuous, then a person who listens to these sayings with complete confidence in the truth of the Buddha’s words, which spring from complete enlightenment, will acquire so virtuous a state of mind that he will be able to conquer any evil influence.

We invite you to participate in the Night-long Paritta chantings and meditation and share the merits and overcome your difficulties of fear, sickness, sleeplessness, tensions, spirit troubles and worries.
